Volcanoes essentially are "breaks/cracks" in the Earth upper crust. Through these cracks during volcano eruption - Earth molten lava comes out and melts everything on its way. Most "infamous" historical volcano eruption happened in the beginning of a new era - in 79 AD: volcano in Italy at Mt. Vesuvius totally destroyed a city of Pompeii.
